Directions:  Twelve Hills is located  at 817 Mary Cliff between King’s Highway and Kyle Ave., Dallas, TX 75208.  From I30 westbound, exit at Sylvan, which is the first exit on the west side of the Trinity River.  (From I30 eastbound, exit at Beckley, make a U-turn onto the westbound service road.)  At the stop light, turn left onto Sylvan and follow it for 1.2 miles.  Turn right onto King’s Highway and drive for .5 miles.  Drive through the Montclair intersection and drive one block.  Turn left onto Mary Cliff. Drive one half block. Twelve Hills is on the right. Park on the street or in the lot.

John Lunsford

Thursday October 14   7:30 – 9pm – Part of the Turner House Salon Series

John Lunsford curates an exhibition of folk art from Mexico and Central America from various private collections in Dallas.  The exhibit will include antique Mayan and Guatemalan textiles as well as old and contemporary examples of baskets, ceramics and Oaxacan painted wood sculptures.  Lunsford will give a gallery talk offering commentary on historical significance and the evolution of craft in contemporary work.

John Lunsford studied at English Lit at Harvard and completed graduate work in art history at Columbia University in New York City. He was a senior curator at the Dallas Museum of Art from 1958 to 1986 and was appointed Director of the Meadows Museum at SMU from1996 to 2001. Lundsford taught art history at SMU for almost twenty years and has long resume of publication, public lectures and lectures/tours for numerous trips throughout the world sponsored by the DMA and the Meadows.

Timothy Young, Dan Cavanagh and Timothy Ishii

Thursday September 9  7:30 – 9:00

The evening will feature Minnesota based, award winning Timothy Young

reading his poetry accompanied by jazz musicians Dan Cavanagh and Timothy Ishii.  The performance blends Cavanagh’s jazz compositions with narration/speaking by Timothy Young.  The music will include piano, saxophone, bass and drumset. The group debuted their collaboration at UT Arlington in 2006. This experimental blend of music and poetry will give a unique opportunity to be introduced to new forms of both.

Timothy Young has been publishing and performing his poetry since l983.  He  founded Two Boots Productions in 2004 to produce poetry, music and art events at community events and festivals nationally and internationally.   His most recent book of poems, Herds of Bears Surround Us, was published by Red Dragonfly Press this year.  Dan Cavanagh is a composer and jazz pianist on the faculty at UT Arlington and Tim Ishii is a composer, jazz saxophonist and director of jazz studies at UT Arlington.  Jaime Reyes will be on drums and Brian Mulholland will be on bass.

New staff proposed fees for the Building Inspection Department will hurt the southern sector disproportionately as we have the most to do and develop.  Many of these fees will hinder business development and revitalization of neighborhoods.  Additionally and especially, the fees for Certificates of Appropriateness and Conservation Districts are offensive.  When we put these programs in place, one of the features that property owners were keen on was “the process will be easy.”  That process is not so easy in reality as the time it takes has lengthened to up to 60 days.  Staff have not been especially helpful during this process, in Lake Cliff’s experience.  Moreover, we get minimal to no enforcement of Historic and Conservation District code provisions proactively or when they are turned in to 311 as a complaint.  These neighborhoods are some of our city’s most fragile.  Taxing us for investing in our homes and businesses is not a prudent policy decision.  I appreciate your consideration.

Richard Davis
Thursday November 11 7:30 – 9:00

Dallas based architect Richard Davis will discuss the origins and practice of the architecture of eclecticism which created the residences and estates of the “Gatsby Era” during the Roaring ’20′s and on into the 1930′s.  Particular attention will be given to the homes of Kessler Park built in European styles. Davis will address the change in design direction in America following the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1892, the leading architects of the period and their work, and the important Dallas architects and their work in Oak Cliff. The presentation will also discuss contemporary eclectic styles.

Richard Davis is president of Richard Davis Architects, Inc. and received his masters degree in architecture from Princeton University.  He has owned his firm for over thirty years and is recognized for his design of local and national luxury residences. Davis is also known for his striking renovation and restoration of the Kessler Theater. He has lived in Winnetka Heights since 2003.

Thank you for your leadership within your respective neighborhoods and for the benefit of Oak Cliff.

A brief update on Cliff Manor.

*We conducted the Town Hall meeting June 21st to update the community on the DHA/MDHA proposal to bring 100 homeless residents to the Cliff Manor. The Mayor, four City Council members, County Judge, DISD Trustee and over 500 citizens attended.

*At two separate City Council meetings neighborhood leaders spoke directly to the Council on the concerns of the MDHA/DHA proposal.

*Daily and weekly press coverage in DMN and on television.

Yes, I think we successfully raised the awareness of this issue and proposal to a city wide status.

Subsequent to our Town Hall Meeting:

1) City Staff has proposed new rules governing relocation of homeless units within the City which will require City Council and community engagement. Action is pending.

2) We still are awaiting determination of whether this change in use meets current zoning regulations.

3) On July 2nd, I met privately with Mike Faenza and Mary Ann Russ to review the feedback from the Town Hall meeting. I reiterated the Mayor’s charge for us to form a Task Force of neighborhood leaders to work with MDHA and DHA to review the viability of this proposal. In the meantime, we all agreed the proposal was to stay on hold.

4) I am presently forming a Task Force to meet the Mayor’s charge of engagement with MDHA/DHA. My criteria is to select leaders that:
- live in the immediate neighborhood
- are capable of articulating the issues and concerns of the proposal and the potential impact on the surrounding neighborhoods
- are capable of working with MDHA/DHA to create standards of behavior,  performance, assimilation into the community and supportive services for potential residents (? qty)
- are capable of creating a measurement of success for such a proposal that can be easily monitored externally
- are capable of communicating back to their constituents the viability of “a” proposal/plan for the benefit of BOTH our North Oak Cliff neighborhoods the redevelopment of the Fort Worth Avenue corridor and permanent supportive housing for the City.

I am thankful for the many citizens who have contacted me to volunteer to participate. I will announce the composition of this Task Force as soon as all have accepted, hopefully next week. We will then begin meetings with MDHA/DHA in July as previously promised.
