Walkable Winnetka

We want to make our neighborhood a better place to walk. That’s why the Winnetka Heights Neighborhood Association created the Walkable Winnetka Sidewalk Repair Matching Grant Program. Under this program, residents can apply for assistance in repairing ‘red rated’ sidewalks in our neighborhood. ‘Red’ sidewalks are our worst sidewalks that are “… gone, impassable or presents a significant trip hazard”. Here are brief descriptions of two Walkable Winnetka repair options.
Fast Fix
Under this program, the Walk- able Winnetka program takes advantage of the City of Dallas Fast Fix contract pricing for concrete repair. Currently this price is $2.80 per square foot. This price includes tear-out and haul-away and re-pouring new concrete sidewalk pads. Not included are curb repair, problem tree removal, damaged/missing manhole replacement, and the construction of handicap ramps at corners. This program requires an assessment by the City of Dallas engineer in charge of the City of Dallas sidewalk replacement program. Under this program, the WHNA would pay 85% of the repair total cost up to $700.
Cost Share
The City of Dallas Sidewalk Repair Cost Sharing program is used for this grant. Half of this cost is covered by the City. The City also covers costs of tree removal, handicap ramp construction, minor curb repair, and manhole replacement if needed. This program requires an assessment by the engineer in charge of the City of Dallas sidewalk replacement program. Once estimates are approved, they are included as part of the next city budget proposal, and must be approved as part of the entire City of Dallas Budget. For this reason, sidewalk repairs could take from 12 to 24 months. Under the cost share option, the city pays for half the repair costs and the homeowner is responsible for the other half. WHNA would pay 75% of the homeowner’s portion of the repair, up to $700.
For both options, the WH resident is required to contact the City of Dallas and arrange for repair estimates. Once these estimates are complete, the resident is eligible to apply for a Walkable Winnetka Sidewalk Repair Grant. Representatives of the program can supply you with details about each program along with instructions for contacting the City. If you would like a copy of the Walkable Winnetka Sidewalk Repair Program or assistance assessing your sidewalk, please contact Kirk Kirksey at (972) 365 5398 kkirks1414@gmail.com or Diane Sherman at (469) 767 1823 dsherman@davidgriffin.com.
Please note that there is a limited amount of funds available under the program and funds are only available for owner occupied homes (not rental or commercial properties). The WHNA may make additional funds available in the future, but there may not be sufficient funds to fund all grant requests. Grant requests will be reviewed in the order that they are received.
