As summer continues, here are a few tips and reminders to consider:

  • Only 2 garage sales per year, per house; they must be in the back yard or garage!
  • Observe City Code concerning automatic sprinkler systems; they should not be on between 10am and 5pm
  • Keep applying for CAs for ALL significant front yard landscaping changes

Front yard plants and gardens

July 23rd, 2008 by whna

Being mindful of living in a historic neighborhood means putting period plants in the front lawn/flower beds. Landscaping as per Winnetka Heights Ordinance #18369 is as follows:
“Certain items prohibited in front and corner side yards. The following items are not permitted in the front or side yards:
A) Above ground meters
B) Berms
C) Cacti
D) Pylons and similar structures
E) Rock or Sculpture gardens
F) Vegetable gardens

This would obviously include other ‘tropical’ type plants. For a list of approved trees please go to page 50 in the ordinance here

What is the Certificate of Appropriateness (CA)?

July 23rd, 2008 by whna

The CA is a written authorization from the City of Dallas that assures any proposed exterior changes are architecturally correct for the time period represented by your home. The Task Force and members of the Landmark Commission approve the CA. This group meets once a month, so allow two to eight weeks to approve your request.

Water Restrictions

July 23rd, 2008 by whna

America is a land of plenty, but water, like all natural resources is in limited supply. Since North Texas has been experiencing drought conditions, it is important for us to use our water resources wisely and minimize water-waste. During the summer months, we can use more than 50% of our drinking water on landscapes.

Dallas passed a Water Conservation Ordinance in 2001 and violations of these outdoor water guidelines can result in fines of $250 to $2,000 per incident.

The Conservation Ordinance outdoor watering guidelines include:

* Water before 10 am or after 6 pm.
* Hand-water or use a soaker hose. Both are permitted at any time.
* Maintain your sprinkler system. Repair any broken, missing or misdirected sprinkler heads.
* Automatic sprinkler system owners are required to have rain and freeze sensors installed.
* Monitor your total water usage. If you use more than 15,000 gallons a month, you’ll pay a surcharge on the amount above 15,000.
* Don’t water during any form of precipitation.
* Don’t allow your sprinkler system to water driveways, sidewalks and streets.
* Don’t waste water by allowing runoff onto a street or other drainage area when you’re watering.
* Don’t water your yard between 10 am and 6 pm between June 1 and September 30 (unless you’re using a soaker hose or hand-watering).

You can report water waste at http://311.dallascityhall.com/web_intake/Controller or call 311 (if you are using a cell phone or are calling from outside Dallas city limits please call 214.670.5111).
