Urban Coops on Tour

October 7th, 2011 by Lee Ruiz (President)

Your neighbors with Oak Cliff Coop Snoop are raising awareness of backyard chicken keeping while also raising money to install coops and flocks in Dallas schools.  Its members believe that a movement toward local, ethically raised food can begin in your backyard.  In 2011, Oak Cliff Coop Snoop is showcasing at least 8 urban chicken coops – all within a one mile radius!

COOL Events Are Coming Up!!

August 7th, 2011 by Michele Colbert

Saturday, August 20th, join us as we start to get our neighborhood ready for the Holiday Home Tour.  That’s right – we’re starting already!  Our first goal is to get our park spaces spruced up.  It’s hot which is why we’re starting at 7 AM.  Meet us at the park on the corner of Jefferson and Windomere.  Coffee and donuts provided!  Bring your gardening tools – we want to prune, rake and clean because this is a bulk trash weekend.
If you are interested in participating or have additional questions, please call Michele Colbert at (2) 943.3445 or email her at vicepresident@winnetkaheights.org.

Saturday, September 24th, we’ll have our very own pop-up dog park in conjunction with Fido Oak Cliff (www.fidooakcliff.org).  Call it our version of StreetFest for our 4-legged friends/ FidoFest will be held at the park on the east side of the 12th Street Connector.  In addition to a safe environment for your pups to run and play with other neighborhood dogs, we’ll also have local pet-friendly vendors in attendance.  Learn about local pet ordinances and pet adoption programs plus local low-cost spay and neuter options.

The Peace, Love and Winnetka Heights float definitely made an impression during this weekend’s Mardi Gras parade.  The 60’s themed-float won Honorable Mention – a close second to the Stevens Park entry.  Many thanks go out to the following neighbors that spent a lot of time and energy on our entry:

Lee Ruiz, Chris Barker, Crystal & Fernando Gonzalez, Holli Murray, David Haedge, Mike Walker, Oscar Brown, Rob Romano, Sandi Adams and Michele Colbert.  Special thanks to Carol and Jack Hagler for their hospitality pre and post parade on Sunday.  A big thank you also to all of the neighbors who marched in the parade with the float and carried ‘protest’ signs along the route.

The neighborhood has received a lot of great press as a result of our entry.  See the links below:

Coup at Executive Board Spawns Rogue Publication, President Denies Involvement

April 1st, 2009 by whna

It was always common knowledge that the Winnetka Heights Executive Board wielded power over the neighborhood that it governed with an iron fist, but the recent installation of Jeff Fahrenholz as Communications committee chair opened a new chapter in the sad history of David Haedge and Kyle Ward’s autocratic leadership.

When asked for a comment on how this decision reflects on his leadership style, Haedge simply said that “the newsletter format was pretty well-established prior to Jeff joining the board, but I knew that if I pitched the idea to him correctly, he would mistakenly think that whole thing was his idea.” When later informed that this statement would implicate him in the process, Haedge distanced himself personally, calling it a “matter for the board”. However, Ward was more willing to admit his influence in the newsletter, stating simply, “it was a decision that the board made, and I am the decider.”
